Solana’s Alpenglow Upgrade: Leap to Sub-Second Finality

A simple breakdown of Solana’s proposed consensus overhaul, its goal of 100–150 millisecond finality, and the improvements and trade-offs it brings.

As a builder deeply immersed in the Solana ecosystem, I’ve never been more excited about the upgrades ahead. One of the most anticipated is Alpenglow, a major overhaul of how the network reaches consensus on transactions.

Right now, Solana is already super fast for most things, but true finality — when a transaction is locked in and can’t be reversed — takes about 12.8 seconds. Alpenglow aims to bring that down to just 100–150 milliseconds — think almost instant, like swiping a card.
